Karin Breitman lidera uma equipe de cientistas pesquisadores de dados e acompanha uma equipe de soluções na Executive Briefing Center. O Centro é focado em Big Data e a sua aplicação em verticais como óleo e gás, setor público, financeiro e telecomunicações.

Dra. Karin já foi professora na PUC-Rio, publicou recentemente um livro na área e nas ultimas décadas teve uma carreira focada em pesquisas de engenharia de software aplicada e teve vários reconhecimentos de variadas instituições como NASA, CNRS, IBM, Hewlett Packard, CNPq, Faperj e Microsoft.

A pesquisa dela foca em engenharia de software e suas aplicações em conhecimento de representação, dados conectados, semantic web e computação na nuvem.

Prior to joining EMC, Karin Breitman worked as a tenured Computer Science Professor in the Informatics Department of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). She graduated in Electronic Engineering from the Rio de Janeiro State University, got his MSc. degree in Computing Science from Rio de Janeiro Federal University and her DSc. degree in Informatics from PUC-Rio. With a career focus in applied software engineering research, she received numerous grants from public institutions and industry over the last couple of decades. These included NASA, CNRS, IBM, Hewlett Packard, CNPq, Faperj and Microsoft. Her research focused on Software Engineering and its applications in Knowledge Representation, Linked Data, Semantic Web and Cloud Computing.

At EMC Brazil Research and Development Center, Dr. Breitman leads a team of data scientist researchers, oversees a Solutions team and the Executive Briefing Center. The center is focused in Big Data and its applications to the Oil and Gas, Public Sector, Finance and Telecommunications verticals. With ongoing projects with major Brazilian banks, Latin American Telco companies, the city of Rio de Janeiro, Petrobras and major global oil field service providers, the Brazil R&D center is responsible for intellectual property creation as well as innovative services and products included in the global EMC portfolio, notably seismic data compression, smart cities and predictive asset maintenance solutions.

Author of over 90 research papers in conference proceedings and journals, she recently published "Patterns, Programming and Everything", a book by Springer Verlag. She actively participates in program and organizing committees of prestigious conferences, and served in the editorial board and as a reviewer to indexed scientific journals.

She is a co-founder of the Brazilian Computer Society Gender equity initiative, and received the Google Brazil Women in Information Technology award for her contribution in promoting the importance of gender related issues in her country. She was also awarded the Software Engineering Foundation Innovation Award for her work in Cloud Computing Conceptual Modeling, and the Sócio Destaque award, for her work developing international scientific journals for the Brazilian Computer Society. She is the former Publications Director of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC), and IFIPs TC-1 Secretary. She is a member of the ACM Practitioners Board, a member of the IEEE, and the Brazilian Computer Society.
